Weekly 10

Missed what's been happening in the world of sports?

Herman Juffri wraps up the week's top ten to keep you in the loop.

1. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt completed a hat-trick at the World Championships in Berlin, winning the 100, 200, and 4x100
metre relay race.

Bolt broke his world records for the 100 and 200 metre race with new recorded times of 9.58 and 19.19 seconds respectively.

Just how fast did Bolt average for his 100m sprint?

In one second, he covered 10.44 metres.

2. Defending English title-holders Manchester United were defeated 1-0 by fledgling top-flight team Burnley.

The sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid - £80 million.

Purchase of Antonio Valencia from Wigan Athletic - £16million.

Losing to a newly-promoted Premier League team - Priceless.

3. Brett Favre, considered to be one of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL, comes out of retirement a second time to sign for the Minnesota Vikings.

Critics have ridiculed Favre's retirement announcements, believing it to be nothing more than a mere ploy for media attention.

With a US$25 million two-year deal, Favre is having the last laugh, all the way to the bank.

4. South Korean Yang Yong-eun overturned a Tiger Woods 54-hole lead to become the first Asian-born player to win the US PGA Championship.

Woods, the world number one, had been unbeaten in eight majors he had led after 36 holes.

Yang, ranked 110 in the world, revealed that he had always dreamed of a showdown with Tiger.

Sometimes dreams do come true.

5. The Australia cricket team had reported to the International Cricket Council (ICC) that one of their players was approached by a man suspected to be linked to illegal bookmaking.

The team was commended by the ICC for making the claim, but would have surely been severely dealt with if they did not.

And you can bet on that.

6. South Africa's Caster Semanya was asked to undergo a gender test by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) after her amazing improvement in recent months.

Nonetheless, the 18-year-old ran the 800 metre women's final and won gold.

7. Brawn GP's Rubens Barrichello claimed victory at the European Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton coming in second.

An unfortunate turn of events for Hamilton who had 3.6s lead over Barrichello by lap 36, but was done in when McLaren mechanics failed to have a set of front tyres ready during his pit stop.

Barrichello finally basks in the limelight for Brawn GP, and he has the crew to thank for.

The McLaren crew, that is.

8. The former Harlequins director of rugby, Dean Richards had been banned from coaching for three years by the ERC for his part in the Harlequins 'Bloodgate' scandal.

Richards was found to be at the centre of a cover-up over an incident where Tom Williams faked a blood injury during the Quins' Heineken Cup quarter-final defeat to Leinster

The former England forward will now face real consequences.

9. England regained the Ashes by beating Australia by 197 runs, avenging their loss two years ago.

British papers have hailed the victory, as the Ashes are now home.

10. Manchester City have signed Joleon Lescott for a fee believed to be in the region of £25million.

The big-spending English club have managed to secure yet another sought-after player, all while infuriating another Premier League club.
