Bologna 0-2 Chievo

Chievo picked up their first points of the season with two first-half goals at winless Bologna.

As expected the hosts welcomed Marco Di Vaio, last season's third top-scorer in the league, but he was unable to lift his side in a match where they could not find the necessary cutting edge up front.

Giampiero Pinzi and Sergio Pillissier found the net for Chievo, who had suffered defeat in their previous two outings.

With both teams looking first and foremost for survival this season, it was a surprisingly open start to the match, with each side starting in positive fashion.

Indeed, it took just 18 minutes for the visitors to take the lead.

Luciano started the move, charging down the right and putting a dangerous ball in to the area.

Pellissier and Pinzi were both denied by Bologna goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano before Pinzi reacted quickest to a loose ball to prod home.

Di Vaio had a chance to level seven minutes later with a free-kick 25 yards from goal but he failed to clear the wall.

It was the only chance his side had to equalise before Pellissier doubled Chievo's advantage on the half-hour mark.

Andrea Mantovani was involved this time, breaking down the left hand side before finding Pellissier with a low cross.

The 30-year-old striker took the ball well before beating Miguel Britos and firing home.

Francesco Valiani had a half-chance to pull one back for the home team before the half-time whistle but saw his well-struck shot deflected into touch for a corner.

The lively Pellissier again caused problems in first-half injury-time, drawing a foul out Massimo Mutarelli, but Michele Marcolini's hopeful free-kick failed to hit the target.

Bologna, desperate to add a win to their two draws to date, came out with more intent, Pablo Osvaldo producing a fine run and shot early in the second period but seeing his effort well saved by Stefano Sorrentino.

Osvaldo was again involved after 53 minutes but this time headed over from a good position.

Chievo also had chances to make it 3-0, Pinzi nodding just wide from Erjon Bogdani's cross.

With time running short, substitute Adailton managed to find Di Vaio in front of goal but instead of getting a shot away first time the veteran took a touch and lost his chance.

Chances continued to come and go for Giuseppe Papadopulo's side, Adailton going close himself with a volley seven minutes from time, while Luca Ariatti got away with a late penalty shout.

The game ended with Bologna punting hopeful long balls to the head of Uruguayan substitute Marcelo Zalayeta but there was little success.

For Papadopulo's side things are unlikely to get easier, with AC Milan at the San Siro up next week and a visit to Turin to face Juventus also stated for the end of the month.
