Brodeur equals shut-out record

Martin Brodeur tied the NHL's all-time shut-out record as New Jersey Devils beat Buffalo Sabres 3-0 to move into a tie for top spot in the Atlantic division.

Goals from Brian Rolston, Travis Zajac and Niclas Bergfors sealed victory, but it was Brodeur who captured the headlines.

His 22 saves earned him the 103rd shut-out of his illustrious career, equalling the mark set by Hall-of-Famer Terry Sawchuk.

The win saw the Devils move alongside Pittsburgh Penguins, who were beaten 3-2 on home ice by Carolina Hurricanes.

Andrew Alberts, Jussi Jokinen and Ray Whitney put the visitors 3-0 up before Sidney Crosby and Mike Rupp hit back for Pittsburgh.

Chris Stewart scored twice as Colorado Avalanche beat St Louis Blues 4-0 to move into top spot in the North-West Division.

Paul Stastny and Matt Duchene also scored as netminder Peter Budaj made 35 saves to preserve the shut-out.

Previous divisional leaders Calgary Flames slipped up with a 2-1 defeat to Los Angeles Kings, Scott Parse and Jarret Stoll scoring the early goals as Curtis Glencross replied for Calgary.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice on his return from suspension as Washington Capitals beat Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0, with Eric Fehr also on the scoresheet.

The result extended Washington's lead over South-East Division rivals Atlanta Thrashers, who were beaten 5-2 by Toronto Maple Leafs.

Alexei Ponikarovsky scored twice and Lee Stempniak, Matt Stajan and Mikhail Grabovski were also on target for the Canadian side.

Phoenix Coyotes beat Minnesota Wild 2-0, Edmonton Oilers saw off Florida Panthers 3-2 in overtime and Montreal Canadiens secured a low-key 3-1 win over Philadelphia Flyers.
