
Takuro Fuji won his second and third golds of the East Asian Games as Japan and China claimed four apiece in the pool on day five of competition in Hong Kong.
Ryo Tateshi won the first gold of the evening's eight finals for Japan in the men's 50 metres breaststroke, but the two countries subsequently traded victories with Fuji taking the men's 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly - the latter in a Games record of 51.51 seconds - and Ryosuke Irie winning the men's 100m backstroke, also in a record mark of 52.76secs.
China fought back in the women's events, however, triumphing in the 100m backstroke, 400m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Gao Chang set a new Games record in the backstroke with a time of 59.77secs as did Sun Ye in the breaststroke with a mark of two minutes 22.59secs.
China won the relay in a record time of 3:39.75secs while Wang Xinyu came home first in the freestyle.
Elsewhere, hosts Hong Kong added two more golds to their haul after winning both the men's and women's team squash finals 2-0 against Japan. South Korea took bronze in both competitions.
Pak Hyon-suk won North Korea's fourth gold of the Games in the women's 63kg weightlifting final with a combined weight of 247kg, a new Games record, to finish well clear of Macau's Liu Xia and Guo Xiyan from China.
South Korea's Kim Kwang-hoon won the men's 77kg category by a kilogram from China's Liao Hui, while Lu Yong took gold for China in the men's 85kg class.
In volleyball, China beat Japan 3-2 in the men's final with South Korea pocketing bronze after defeating Hong Kong. In the women's final, China outclassed their regional rival 3-0 while South Korea again saw off Hong Kong for the bronze.
In non-medal action, China closed in on a place in the women's hockey final after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Japan maintained their 100% record.
Zhang Wen-ting scored a crucial first-half goal as China top the qualifying group by two points from Japan and South Korea - who thrashed Hong Kong 8-0 thanks to four goals from Lee Sook-yung.
Meanwhile, China and Chinese Taipei will contest the final of the women's team badminton and Japan guaranteed gold in the men's singles tennis after Ito Tatsuma and Yuichi Sugata both won their semi-final matches.
