Siena 2-1 Udinese

Abdelkader Ghezzal and Gaetano D'Agostino traded injury-time goals as Siena held off Udinese in an exciting finale.

The result could prove crucial for the hosts, who moved off the bottom of Serie A, in place of Catania, thanks to their three-point haul.

Massimo Maccarone had given them the lead after 66 minutes and it looked like that goal would be enough until the stoppage-time drama that left the Stadio Artemio Franchi faithful breathless.

Things had started well for Siena, with Maccarone setting in motion a dangerous move in the seventh minute.

He found Michele Paolucci with a nicely weighted through ball, with the striker quickly crossing for Reginaldo.

The Brazilian forward narrowly failed to make contact but Udinese's Gokhan Inler was sufficiently unnerved to divert the ball towards his own net.

Samir Handanovic was on hand to make the save, sparing his team-mate's blushes.

Paolucci attempted to surprise Handanovic six minutes later with a powerful long-distance strike that just missed the target.

It took Udinese longer to settle into a rhythm but they could have snatched the opening goal when Antonio Floro Flores headed just wide from a 25th-minute corner.

Albin Ekdal did not get enough on his header as Siena tried to reassert themselves on the half-hour mark, before Cristian Zapata sent an attempt of his own high over the crossbar.

The Bianconeri had one final opportunity before the half-time whistle, Paolucci and Maccarone linking up before the latter's cut-back failed to find any takers in the Udinese area.

Siena, with just two league wins to their name this season, appeared buoyed by their first-half exploits and, after resuming, Maccarone chanced his arm with a hopeful strike from range that appeared to heading in until Handanovic athletically tipped it over the crossbar.

It was still goalless with 65 minutes gone but again it was Siena making the running. This time Reginaldo was the creator, finding Gael Genevier only for the midfielder's volley to force another smart save from Handanovic.

Just a minute later the Slovenian goalkeeper was finally beaten, Maccarone cutting in from the left before curling a wonderful shot into the top corner.

With 10 minutes left to play it was Siena number one Gianluca Curci's chance to impress, pulling off a reflex block from substitute Francesco Lodi, who had been teed up by Bernardo Corradi.

Maccarone was still causing problems for the Udinese defence, ghosting past Dusan Basta before giving Ghezzal a presentable chance at the far post.

This time Handanovic's save was a straightforward one as Ghezzal nodded weakly at goal.

With the full-time whistle approaching the Frenchman did find the target, neatly lobbing the keeper after collecting Goncalo Brandao's deep cross.

That should have ensured the win but there was further drama in added time as D'Agostino somehow deceived Curci from 30 yards.

It was too late to find a second, though, and the final whistle saw Siena leapfrog Catania at the foot of the table.
