Bayern Munich 3-0 Mainz

Bayern Munich moved back to the top of Bundesliga thanks courtesy of a comfortable win over Mainz at a wintry Allianz Arena.

After a frustrating first half, Bayern finally went ahead in the 58th minute through Daniel van Buyten.

Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben completed the scoring to seal the Bavarians' seventh straight victory which takes them to the summit for at least 24 hours and puts the pressure on Bayer Leverkusen, who meet Freiburg tomorrow.

Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel joked on the eve of the game that he would like to park the team bus in front of his side's goal and it seemed like he had stealthily done just that in the first half.

There was something repelling Bayern from putting the ball in the back of the net, despite the numerous chances the home side created.

Gomez could have had a hat-trick, with the closest he got to scoring being a shot against the post after half an hour.

Robben was also showing his usual trickery to carve open chances for Gomez, Ivica Olic and Thomas Muller.

Muller earned a penalty for Bayern in the 32nd minute when he was fouled by Niko Bungert inside the penalty area.

However, the usually reliable Hans-Jorg Butt saw his spot kick saved by opposing goalkeeper Heinz Muller.

Muller was denied again twice early in the second half before Bayern's prolific defender Van Buyten showed the strikers how to put the ball into the back of the net.

He met Robben's cross with a header which Mainz's goalkeeper Muller probably should have saved, but the ball squirmed in to earn the Belgian his fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute.

As the pitch began to turn white with the falling snow, Bayern sealed their seventh straight win with Gomez finally hitting the target.

He turned in Philipp Lahm's low cross from the right in the 75th minute to double Bayern's lead before a free-kick from Robben five minutes from time completed the rout and took Bayern to the top of the Bundesliga.
