Capital show from superb Semin

Washington Capitals scored four times in the final period to claim a 5-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks and record their eighth straight win on Wednesday.

Alexander Semin scored twice for the Eastern Conference leaders, who went into the third sector level at 1-1.

Goals from Shaone Morrisonn, Mike Knuble and Semin had Washington 4-1 up just five minutes into the final period, though, to all but kill the contest.

Alex Ovechkin had put the Capitals in front in the first period before Dan Sexton levelled in the second.

Jason Pominville and Jochen Hecht scored in the shootout to give the Buffalo Sabres a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Adam Mair had put the Sabres in front in the first period, but Brian Rolston equalised for the Devils.

Eric Staal and Sergei Samsonov both netted twice as the Carolina Hurricanes posted a 5-1 success over the New York Rangers.

Antero Niittymaki made 33 saves to help the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-0 triumph over the Montreal Canadiens.

Antti Miettinen scored twice in the first period as the Minnesota Wild recorded a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Pavel Datsyuk got both goals for the Red Wings.

Loui Eriksson netted in the third round of the shootout to give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames.

The Flames, who led 2-1 after the first period and 3-2 after the second, could not find a way past Stars goaltender Alex Auld with any of their three attempts in the shootout.

The Vancouver Canucks beat the St Louis Blues 3-2 thanks to a brace from Mason Raymond.
