Pakistan survive Bangladesh scare

Bangladesh ran Pakistan close in their ICC U19 World Cup at Palmerston North on Wednesday before going down in the last over.

Pakistan were set 251 to win and looked well on course when they coasted to 104 for no loss in the 27th over before losing opener Ahamad Shahzad for 52.

Shahzad’s opening partner Muhammad Babar dropped anchor and cracked a fluent 91 off 110 deliveries before perishing. Pakistan, still looked in control at 173 for four despite losing Azeem Ghumman the previous over.

Bangladesh pounced on the opportunity to take two more wickets and stifle up the runs but Hammad Azam (27 off 22 balls) and Muhammad Waqas (34 off 14) ensured Bangladesh did not cause any upset as Pakistan reached home with just one ball to spar and four wickets in hand.

Earlier, electing to bat, Bangladesh put up a solid display to post 250 for five. Anamul Haque and skipper Mahmudul Hasan struck half-centuries as none of Pakistan’s bowlers seemed to get through the Bangla line-up except Usman Qadir, who snapped up two for 44 off his 10 overs.
