Singapre S.League Review

Gabriel Obatola bagged a brace as Gombak United moved into the top three in the S.League with a 2-1 win over Balestier Khalsa.

Obatola struck in the 14th and 67th minutes to put the hosts two goals up and set them on their way to their first win in six games.

New signing Oh Ddog Yi grabbed a late goal for Balestier with his first for the club with 17 minutes to play.

Oh was one of four new signings who had helped inspire successive wins for Balestier but his goal failed to help last year's bottom side move any further away from cellar-dwellers Young Lions.

They are now only a point off the bottom having played a game more, while Gombak move two points clear in third place ahead of DPMM Brunei.

Football: Quickfire goals help Geylang clinch turnaround in S.League match

Geylang United scored two goals in three second—half minutes to overcome a half—time 0—1 deficit and emerge 2—1 winners over the Super Reds at Yishun Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The result marked the end of the Koreans’ unbeaten streak on home soil this season, as they saw their title hopes suffer a major blow.

Seo Su Jong had scored the opener for his side on 35 minutes, when he finished an outstanding individual move on the right flank with a placed shot from a tight angle that beat Yazid Yasin.

But former Super Reds star Kim Jae Hong equalized for Geylang 12 minutes into the second half, and his goal was quickly followed by Eagles captain Noor Ali’s winner.

In a separate match, Shinya Yamagishi marked his S.League debut with the winning goal as Albirex Niigata FC (Singapore) overcame the Young Lions 1—0 at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The 20—year—old, handed his first start due to injuries to several Albirex regulars, netted with a header off a Takeshi Miki cross on the left flank 22 minutes into the game.

Despite putting together a hastily—cobbled side, the Japanese outfit were generally in control throughout the first half as the Young Lions struggled to cope with their opponents’ fluency and aggression on the field.

The second half was more balanced as Albirex took their foot off the pedal, but a lack of composure up front consigned the Young Lions to their sixth consecutive defeat in the league as they remained second from bottom.
