Beckett rings up his century

Josh Beckett's 100th career win was a little extra special as he tossed a complete game shutout for Boston in a 6-0 win over Kansas City.

Beckett allowed only three hits and struck out seven for the milestone victory, his 11th of the season.

Kevin Youkilis' single in the first plated Dustin Pedroia for Boston's first run of the game - the only one Beckett would need.

However, Boston added plenty of insurance, not least thanks to rookie first baseman Aaron Bates, who had an RBI double among his three hits.

The win saw Boston extend their advantage at the top of the American League East to three games as a New York Yankees rally fell short in a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Trailing 5-2, the Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth inning. Melky Cabrera's single plated Hideki Matsui, and Robinson Cano then scored on Jorge Posada's sacrifice fly, but Nick Swisher hit into a double play to end the inning.

Brian Fuentes then shut the door on the Yankees for his 26th save of the season.

John Lackey earned the win with seven innings of two-run ball, outpitching Yankees ace CC Sabathia, who was charged with five runs in 6 2/3 innings.

The Angels have a 1 1/2 game advantage atop the AL West over the Texas Rangers, who lost their second straight game to the Seattle Mariners, going down 5-3 in the Emerald City.

The AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers pounded the Cleveland Indians 10-1 as their bats came alive at Comerica Park.

They collected 13 hits as the middle of the line-up exploded. Brandon Inge had a pair of home runs, Clete Thomas added another as he went a double short of the cycle, and Marcus Thames had a career-high four hits.

That was far more than Detroit starter Justin Verlander needed as he held the Indians scoreless for seven innings for his 10th win of the season.

The Chicago White Sox have fallen 3 1/2 games back in the division as they lost 13-7 to the Minnesota Twins.

Denard Span set the tone with a lead-off homer for the Twins, who then added a three-run blast from Carlos Gomez in the second, jumping all over Chicago lefty Mark Buehrle.

Brendan Harris added a homer of his own in the fifth inning to end the day for Buehrle, who allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

For the second straight day, the Oakland Athletics used a big seventh inning to come from behind and beat the Tampa Bay Rays.

Trailing 3-0, the A's suddenly solved Rays starter James Shields and scored four runs in the seventh to take the lead en route to a 7-3 victory.

Matt Holliday got things starter with a double, scoring on Kurt Suzuki's single.

After Shields was lifted, Landon Powell walked before Jack Cust hit an RBI single and Mark Ellis an RBI groundout. Orlando Cabrera added another RBI single to complete the rally.

Rookie Brad Bergesen continued his strong form with 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2.
