The BPL Numbers Game 01


Eugene YS Han takes out his abacus to fish out the numbers that matter from the opening weekend of the Barclays Premier League.

0 - Aston Villa have never beaten Wigan at home in Premier League history - they have lost three and drawn two.

0 - Hull still have not beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in any competition.

1 - Wigan have won for the first time on the opening day in the league - previously they have lost all their openers.

1 - Liverpool's Sammy Lee is the first assistant manager to be sent off this season.

3 - Three managers take charge of their first Premier League match - Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea, Roberto Martinez with Wigan and newly-promoted Burnley's Owen Coyle.

4 - Fulham have not lost on their last four visits to Fratton Park, winning twice and drawing twice.

5 - Arsenal's 6-1 away win at Goodison Park equalled the biggest opening victory in the Premier League. In 2001, Bolton won 5-0 at Leicester while Liverpool won 6-1 at Crystal Palace in 1994.

5 - Manchester City have won their first league game at Ewood Park since 2003 when they won 3-2 in the third match of their campaign.

6 - Chelsea have won their sixth successive league game (continued from last season).

6 - Fulham have won for the first time in six opening Premier League fixtures.

6 - Everton opened their campaign at Goodison Park for the sixth successive year and they have lost five of those matches.

6 - The number of players who scored on their debuts: Emmanuel Adebayor (Man City), Stephen Hunt (Hull), Darren Bent (Sunderland), Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal), Sebastien Bassong (Tottenham)

6 - Away team were leading in 6 out of 8 matches played on Saturday.

7 - Tottenham have won their seventh successive home league game and they not been beaten at the Lane since 30 November 2008 (12 games).

8 - Chelsea have won their opening Premier League matches in each of the last eight seasons.

11 - Sunderland have won away for the first time in the league after 11 tries.

22 - Manchester United are now unbeaten against Birmingham in 22 games (21 in the league), winning 14 and drawing six since 11 November 1978.

25 - Hull's Bernard Mendy was the first player to be booked this season - overall 25 yellow cards were issued.

28 - Stephen Hunt who cost Hull £3.5 million scored the season's first goal after 28 minutes into his debut against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

33 - Owen Coyle leads Burnley into their first match in the top-flight for 33 years. Stephen Jordan becomes the first Burnley player to find the net but it was an own goal - the first of the season.

100 - Defender/Striker Christopher Samba has made 100 appearances for Blackburn.

140 - Sunderland beat Bolton 1-0 in their 140th meeting in all competitions.

150 - Burnley's Wade Elliott made his 150th league start.

191 - Aston Villa's Brad Freidel has made a record breaking 191 consecutive Premier League appearances.

252 - Everton have lost 252 Premier League matches, more than any other club.

300 - Journeyman Jason Roberts has recorded 300 career league starts.

450 - Long-throw specialist Rory Delap has made 450 club appearances.
