J.League leaders Kashima Antlers suffered their fourth defeat of the season after they lost 3-1 at Omiya Ardija.
The visitors fell behind in the fourth minute through Tomoya Uchida and that was the way it stayed until the last 10 minutes when Kohei Tokita doubled the advantage and Mato Neretljak made the points safe.
Takuya Nozawa pulled a goal back with one minute to go but Kashima will see their once seemingly impenetrable lead reduced to five points if second-placed Kawasaki Frontale win their game in hand.
Gamba Osaka climbed to fourth following a 3-1 triumph at Jubilo Iwata. Satoshi Yamaguchi set Akira Nishino's men on their way in the 37th minute and South Korea international Cho Jae-jin extended the lead three minutes after the break.
Masato Yamazaki netted a third in the 76th minute before Masashi Nakayama grabbed a consolation for Jubilo just before half-time.
At the other end of the table, hapless Oita Trinita suffered their 20th loss of the season with a 2-0 defeat at FC Tokyo.
Second-half goals from Everaldo Cabore and Takuji Yonemoto did the damage to leave bottom side Oita 17 points from safety.
Elsewhere, Takayuki Yoshida scored twice as Vissel Kobe saw off Urawa Reds 3-2, Keiji Tamada's 20th-minute goal was good enough for Nagoya Grampus to edge Albirex Niigata, while Yokohama F. Marinos and JEF United Chiba drew 1-1.
