Siena 3-2 Catania

Siena's 12-match winless run came to an end as they beat Catania in an entertaining game at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

Substitute Michele Paolucci struck the winner shortly after the hour mark to hand the Tuscan outfit their first triumph since August 30.

Jorge Martinez put the visitors in front in the 14th minute before substitute Emiliano Calaio levelled the score shortly after the re-start.

Martinez scored his second of the afternoon in the 58th minute to hand Catania a 2-1 lead only for Siena defender Claudio Terzi to restore parity seconds later.

The outcome has left Siena still at the foot of the Serie A standings, level on nine points with Catania, with both sides three points from safety.

Siena went into the encounter looking to avoid their fourth straight defeat but mustered little in an opening half that was dominated by the visitors.

However, the Tuscan outfit came to life in the second half and deserved the triumph.

Takayuki Morimoto had the first chance of the game early on with his left-footed strike from Marco Biagianti's assist forcing Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Curci to dive to his right to clear.

It spurred the islanders into life, who showed more determination in attack and could have broken the deadlock shortly after.

Curci did well to palm over the crossbar Morimoto's header from Giuseppe Bellusci's cross.

There was little Curci could do to deny Catania seconds later.

Martinez latched onto Giuseppe Mascara's cross and his left-footed strike from the heart of the area towards the right post beat Curci.

Catania should have doubled the lead midway through the first half but Curci made a crucial save to palm over the bar Pablo Ledesma's lobbed ball from 20 yards out.

Siena finally put a good move together in the 36th minute.

Simone Vergassola's close-range header from Michele Fini's cross went wide of the post.

The hosts should have levelled the score before half-time but Abdel Ghezzal's header from Fini's cross went high.

Siena coach Alberto Malesani made a double substitution after the re-start with Calaio and Paolucci joining the game.

It soon paid dividends as Siena equalised in the 50th minute.

Paolucci passed to Calaio inside the area, whose left-footed strike beat Catania goalkeeper Mariano Andujar.

Siena's joy was shortlived as Catania regained the lead five minutes later.

Martinez did well to anticipate Terzi inside the area and nodded past Curci from Bellusci's assist.

The visitors had little time to rejoice as Siena levelled the score one minute later.

An unmarked Terzi latched onto Cristiano Del Grosso's cross to head past Andujar.

Siena continued to surge forward and their efforts paid off with 28 minutes remaining.

Paolucci latched onto Massimo Maccarone's cross towards the near post and fired past Andujar.

The visitors were unable to get past Siena's well-organised defence in the latter stages of the game as their hosts held on for their second win of the campaign.
