Alexander Semin scored twice for the Capitals, who led 4-1 after the first period.
Brendan Morrison, John Erskine, Mike Knuble, Jason Chimera and Brooks Laich were also on target for Washington.
Rob Schremp, who halved the deficit to 2-1, and Kyle Okposo, who made it 5-2, registered for the Islanders.
