Higgins earn win for Rangers

A late goal by Christopher Higgins earned New York Rangers a 3-2 win over Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden.

Higgins struck with just one minute 29 seconds remaining as the Rangers claimed just their second victory in 10 home games.

The hosts had taken the lead through Ales Kotalik's power-play midway through the first period, his first goal since November 5 last year.

The Rangers doubled their lead after 7:34 of the second period when Erik Christensen scored his second in three matches and they appeared to be easing to victory.

However, the Bruins hit back in the third period and quickfire goals by Matt Hunwick (14:33) and Blake Wheeler (15:59) looked to have earned the visitors a result.

But Higgins sneaked the puck home after Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask left his post too early to clinch victory and guide the Rangers into joint seventh in the Eastern Conference.

It may have been a doubly expensive defeat for Boston after Patrice Bergeron left the ice with a hand injury after being hit by a shot by Dennis Wideman.

Los Angeles Kings claimed their third consecutive victory when they inflicted a 6-2 defeat on San Jose - the Sharks' first defeat since December 12.

The Kings scored three times in the final 4:23 of the first period:

Michal Handzus opened the scoring and then Oscar Moller and Anze Kopitar added power-play goals.

Los Angeles made it 5-0 with two goals 14 seconds apart late in the second period through Ryan Smyth and Wayne Simmonds before Scott Parse rounded off the rout 13 seconds into the third period.

However, the Kings' hopes of a shutout were dashed by Douglas Murray and Patrick Marleau.
