New Zealand registered a stunning last-over victory against England in the play-off for the seventh place in the ICC U-19 WC at Christchurch.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first. Joe Root and Jos Buttler started England’s innings on a cautious note, with Root contributing an important 32. Jack Manuel was the highest scorer for England, hitting 43 runs from 53 balls as England put up 228/9 on board. Adam Ball remained unbeaten on 28 and added some quick runs in the end of the innings.
Tim Johnston and Ben Wheeler took three wickets each and kept England batsmen under check.
In reply, the Kiwis got off to a shaky start and both their openers were dismissed in the first three overs. Craig Cachopa and Corey Anderson put up a 100-run partnership for the fourth wicket to bring New Zealand back into the fray. Cachopa made 64 runs and Anderson hit 50 before both of them lost their wickets in quick succession.
Logan van Beek finished unbeaten on 51 from 46 balls and saw his side safely to the victory. He was adjudged the man-of-the-match. Matthew Dunn and Nathan Buck took three wickets each for England.
