Schalke twice hit the woodwork and had a goal cruelly disallowed in a scoreless draw away to Freiburg.
Schalke have not lost in seven games - with five victories - but Felix Magath's team could only move to 42 points for third place, three points behind Leverkusen.
Freiburg ended their four-game losing streak to improve to 19 points in 15th place - two points clear of the drop zone - despite continuing their scoring problems with just one goal in the last six contests.
The game started with both sides eager to attack though neither created any serious chances in the first half hour.
Cedric Makiadi then struck just wide to the left of goal from 15 yards in the 31st minute for the hosts.
Schalke were just inches from grabbing the lead a minute later but Kevin Kuranyi's header from eight yards came back off the right post.
Freiburg hit the goal frame themselves 10 minutes later with Mohamadou Idrissou's header hitting the crossbar after a free-kick.
Schalke were robbed of a goal three minutes after the re-start as Marcelo Bordon headed off the underside of the crossbar and the ball clearly crossed the goal line, television replays showed.
The visitors threatened again with 26 minutes left as Kuranyi snatched possession before chipping the ball just wide left of the far post.
Freiburg could not muster any menace in the second half and Schalke were just off-target a final time with seven minutes remaining as Jefferson Farfan's shot went just wide right from 18 yards.
