Sven Kramer cut a disconsolate figure after being disqualified for stepping over the outside cone in the 10,000m speed skating.
It cost world record holder Kramer a second gold of the Games.
Kramer posted an Olympic record time of 12 minutes 54.50 seconds but could only hold his head in his hands after his costly mistake.
Kramer's disqualification meant Korean Lee Seung-Hoon took the gold in 12mins 58.55secs, also an Olympic record.
The silver went to Ivan Skobrev in 13:02.07 with Dutchman Bob de Jong claiming the bronze in 13:06.73.
