Bayern Munich went top of the Bundesliga but handed the initiative to Bayer Leverkusen as their winning run came to an end.
Bayern looked set for a 14th consecutive victory in all competitions when Thomas Muller gave them the lead after 38 minutes, but Ilkay Gundogan levelled nine minutes into the second period to hand Nurnberg an impressive point.
The draw left Bayern a point clear at the top but, with Leverkusen travelling to Werder Bremen tomorrow, their rivals have a chance to re-establish a two-point cushion.
The first half was a dull affair, as Nurnberg sat back and absorbed the Bayern pressure.
Bayern for their part dominated possession and their patience was finally rewarded seven minutes before the break when they scored with the first real chance of the match.
Ivica Olic advanced down the left and crossed into the area.
Mario Gomez took the ball and pulled it back into the area where Muller finished from 10 yards.
Olic could have made it two in the last minute of the half put sent Arjen Robben's cutback wide.
It proved a costly miss as Nurnberg levelled less than 10 minutes into the second period.
Hans-Jorg Butt parried Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's close-range shot, but only as far as Gundogan, who converted low from six yards.
Buoyed, Nurnberg briefly looked for a winner, Gundogan going close from 18 yards.
But their adventure lasted only briefly before they reverted to their defensive tactics which, aside from one Gomez strike which was tipped over by Raphael Schafer, succeeded in keeping Bayern chanceless.
