The Detroit Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 thanks to Nicklas Lidstrom's third-period strike in the first NHL match since February 14.
Tomas Holmstrom and Johan Franzen gave the Red Wings an early 2-0 lead, however Colorado fought back and Chris Stewart and TJ Galiardi both struck in the second period.
Lidstrom then netted on the power-play midway through the final period and the Avalanche could not draw level again.
The NHL had been on a break due to the ice hockey event taking place at the Winter Olympics, where host nation Canada beat the United States in Sunday's final.
