Gold Coast United 1-1 Adelaide United

New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz scored in stoppage time to snatch Gold Coast United a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United.

A 20th-minute opener from Reds captain Travis Dodd, who was found unmarked at the back post by Mathew Leckie, looked to have lifted Adelaide back into play-off contention following a dominant display from the visitors.

But with time running out, A-League top scorer Smeltz headed home Jason Culina's cross for his 19th goal of the season to move Gold Coast within a point of second-placed Melbourne Victory, who travel to Newcastle Jets tomorrow.

Leaders Sydney, who sit three points clear of defending champions Melbourne, face sixth-placed Perth Glory tomorrow.

After ending Gold Coast's four-match home winning streak, Adelaide sit four points off the play-offs with six games remaining.

Elsewhere, Wellington Phoenix moved up to fourth after striker Eugene Dadi scored twice on his debut to secure a 3-1 win over Brisbane Roar at Westpac Stadium.

The home side took the lead against the run of play midway through the first half as Tim Brown nodded home Manny Muscat's cross from inside the six-yard area.

And after only making the switch from Perth at the start of the week, Dadi doubled the lead 10 minutes after half-time with a contender for goal of the season as the Ivory Coast striker converted a perfectly executed overhead scissor kick.

Two minutes after the hour mark Dadi, who was short of match practice after spending much of this season in the National Youth League after failing to net in six appearances for Perth, tapped home from close range following Paul Ifill's clever cutback to extend the lead.

Sergio van Dijk grabbed a consolation for Brisbane with two minutes remaining as the Roar slipped down to seventh after a second consecutive defeat.

"I think we played really well again. It was good Eugene getting involved - that's always a bonus," said Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert.

"It proved to be the right decision starting him. The players know what's on the line now. That's a great three points for us but there's still a lot of work to go."

Finally, Central Coast Mariners ended a run of five consecutive defeats after sharing a 1-1 draw with North Queensland Fury at Bluetongue stadium.

Nick Mrdja opened the scoring for the Mariners after just five minutes, but Jeremy Brockie's deflected 19th minute strike ensured a share of the spoils.

Gombak score Woodlands win

Gombak United ended a run of five consecutive draws with a 2-0 win over Woodlands Wellington at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Fifth-placed United have slipped off the pace at the top of the table recently following their strong start, and had not won since beating basement side Balestier Khalsa at the end of July.

But Gombak revived hopes of at least matching last year's fifth-placed finish as goals from striker Agu Casmir and a late penalty from Nigerian frontman Gabriel Obatola extended their unbeaten streak to eight games.

Casmi opened the scoring after 22 minutes and after Woodlands' Egyptian striker Zakaria Yousif and Gombak defender Jaslee Hatta were both sent off four minutes later, Obatola wrapped up the three points with seven minutes remaining.

Gombak moved level on points with fourth-placed Home United, who trail third-placed DPMM by just two points.

FC Groningen 0-2 PSV Eindhoven

Danny Koevermans scored twice in 14 second-half minutes to give PSV Eindhoven victory at FC Groningen.

After an evenly-contested opening period, Koevermans proved the difference between the two sides to leave Groningen firmly in the relegation places.

The home side created the first opportunity after eight minutes when Goran Lovre beat Andre Ooijer on the left wing.

Lovre whipped in a teasing cross which flew across the penalty area but no Groningen forwards were in the right position to take advantage.

It took until the 19th minute for Groningen to threaten again, Mike Zonneveld curling a free-kick past the post.

PSV finally created a noteworthy chance of their own with 27 minutes gone, but Otman Bakkal's header was superbly saved by Luciano da Silva as the first half ended scoreless.

The visitors made the better start to the second half and Luciano was pressed into action again on 51 minutes, this time keeping out a Koevermans header.

But there was nothing he could do 15 minutes later when the same player finally broke the deadlock.

Koevermans lost his marker in the area and powered a superb header into the top right corner from 12 yards to give PSV the lead.

And he made sure of all three points 10 minutes from time with Balazs Dzsudzsak again providing an assist.

His cross from the left found Koevermans in the area and he fired a right-foot shot beyond Luciano from 10 yards.

Lyon 3-1 Nancy 1

Goals from Bafetimbi Gomis, Lisandro Lopez and Michel Bastos gave Lyon the points against Nancy in their Ligue 1 clash.

Nancy had the game's first clear chance in the 16th minute, when Julien Féret's free-kick was blocked by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Two minutes later Lloris was busy again, saving Damian Macaluso's header from Feret's corner low down.

In the 20th minute Gomis struck a post - and he was in the action again in the 36th minute when he gave Lyon the lead.

Lisandro and Miralem Pjanic teamed up for Gomis to beat Gennaro Bracigliano with a well-struck shot.

Five minutes into the second half the home side were two goals ahead when Lisandro outpaced Macaluso and beat Bracigliano with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

The visitors gave themselves hope in the 56th minute through Youssouf Hadji, who tapped in from close range after Lloris had blocked an effort from Macaluso.

On the hour Lloris deflected a left-foot shot from Florian Marange onto his post.

But the hosts restored their two-goal advantage with the game's final goal, midway through the second half.

Jean Makoun set up Bastos on the edge of the penalty area - and the Brazilian's powerful left-foot strike gave Bracigliano no chance.

The final chance of note came in the 74th minute, when Lisandro found Cesar Delgado, who dribbled past defender Jordan Lotiès but saw his right-foot shot blocked b

Syria blow Sri Lanka away

Syria kept true to their billing of title-challengers by blanking out Sri Lanka 4-0.

The Syrians did not have to try too hard to get the better of the Lankans, who had surprised all by beating Lebanon 4-3 on Saturday.

With this victory at Ambedkar Stadium on Monday, Syria also consolidated their lead at the top of the table. They are now ahead of the pack with six points in their kitty and six goals to their name.

Syria’s Mohamad Alzino drew first blood in the 27th minute. He headed the cross inside the area straight into the coveted box to set the tone for his 2007 Nehru Cup runners-up side.

Syria, who had opened their campaign with a dreary 2-0 win against Kyrgyzstan, then gave a glimpse of their attacking side. In the 33rd minute, Abdal Razak Al Housian increased his side’s lead. Alaa Alshbli volleyed the ball to him inside the goal box and Housian slotted home without any hitch.

Just four minutes later, the Syrian attack took the 156th-ranked Asian side’s defence by surprise. Lankan custodian Asanka Viraj and his defence line were not even given the time to react when Abdul Fatah Alaga scored his side’s third one. A curling cross from the left edge of the area landed at his feet. Then all that Alaga had to do was to get his left foot to the ball and slip it inside the goal. The Lankans, meanwhile, stood dumb-founded, trying to make out what had struck them.

The second part of the game was also played out on a similar note. The Syrians kept moving the ball on their command. The Lankans, meanwhile, tried their best to sound a threat in the rival area. But all their attempts to live up to the show they put up against Lebanon went in vain. The 95th-ranked Western Asians gave them no chance.
Their goalkeeper Mosan Balhous was all alert to keep his zone from any breach.

Ten minutes into the second part, Alaga struck again to put the lid on the encounter. The rival defence was again left wondering. After failing to match the Syrians’ pace, Lankans could not even put a resistance in their own area. Alaga had positioned himself well in front of an open post. He calmly slipped the approaching cross into the left edge of the goal. The Lankan keeper again could not help but cut a sorry figure.

With 10 minutes remaining, Lankan coach Sampath Perera took out Mohamad Asmeer. But this time the move didn’t have the same effect. In the Lebanon match, as soon as the unyielding midfielder was taken off, the Lankans’ body language and the result changed.

The Syrians, however, proved to be a different cut. They hardly allowed the rivals to penetrate deep. And, some of the shots that Sri Lanka’s workhorse Eridi Channa managed to aim at the Syrian post could not meet the mark.
In the tournament on Tuesday, Lebanon are in a must-win clash against Kyrgyzstan. The 148th-ranked Lebanon will have to win the match to keep themselves in contention.

India overcome hapless Kyrgyzstan

A Baichung Bhutia-inspired India defeated 160th-ranked Kyrgyzstan 2-1 on Sunday.

The skipper, in his 100th appearance for the country, scored the first, while Sunil Chhetri added the second from the spot. For Kyrgyzstan, striker Murzaev Mirlan scored a last-minute consolation.

In front of a sizeable crowd, the defending champions started on a positive note. They seemed boosted by Sri Lanka’s victory against Lebanon on Saturday, as a win in this match would have put them level on points with the East Asians.

Unlike in the previous three matches of the tournament, there was no early goal but India went very close in the sixth minute when a Steven Dias cross was headed just wide off the far post by NP Pradeep. Dias looked particularly lively in the first half and the Mahindra United star, with his persistent crosses from the right flank, was a threat to the Kyrgyzstan defence.

The majority of the opening period was played out in Kyrgyzstan’s half and the relentless pressure paid off as in the 43rd minute, Bhutia controlled a long ball from keeper Subrata Paul and shot towards the far corner. The ball ricocheted off both the posts before going in to put the hosts in front. The crowd erupted in celebration as the skipper was surrounded by his teammates congratulating him on scoring his 41st international goal in his centennial appearance.

The second half started on a similar note with India on the front foot. Bhutia came close to grabbing his second of the evening, but his 48th-minute shot hit the post before rolling wide.

Then in the 58th minute, India doubled their lead through a Sunil Chhetri penalty. Bhutia, who was again in the thick of things, was brought down by Kyrgyzstan goalkeeper, Matiash Pavel. The referee pointed to the spot and Chhetri drove a low shot into the right corner as Pavel went the wrong way.

Kyrgyzstan, though, had a brilliant opportunity to pull one back almost immediately. The visitors were awarded a penalty when striker Mirzaliev Alzambek was fouled in the area. But Paul, who had an impressive game, dived the right way to parry Alzambek’s penalty away and India maintained their two-goal advantage.

India then took their foot off the gas and Kyrgyzstan tried to seize the opportunity. They came close to scoring a couple of times and finally managed to get on the scoresheet when Mirlan scored a tap-in in the last minute of regulation time.

But India held on to take home all three points. With this win, India kept their hopes of making the finals alive and can do so by winning the remaining two games, while Kyrgyzstan, who have lost both their matches so far, are effectively out of the tournament.

India will take on Sri Lanka in their next game on Wednesday, while Kyrgyzstan will face Lebanon on Tuesday.

PSV Eindhoven 3-1 NAC Breda

Three goals in the last half hour saw PSV Eindhoven come from behind to see off NAC Breda.

Edwin de Graaf put NAC ahead after eight minutes - and that was how it stayed until four minutes after the hour mark when Danny Koevermans levelled.

Koevermans snaffled a second after 73 minutes and PSV wrapped up the points in stoppage time through Ibrahim Afellay.

A PSV victory seemed unlikely for most of the match after Tim Gilissen played in De Graaf, who fired home left-footed from 20 yards.

After that it was all PSV but the hosts struggled to find a goal.

Two minutes later Robbert Schilder was inches away from diverting Balazs Dzsudzsak's centre from the left into his own net, and seven minutes before the break Stanislav Manolev crossed for Danko Lazovic, who shot over the bar.

Five minutes after the restart NAC had a rare chance to double their lead.

Martijn Reuser played Schilder through on goal, but his shot from close range was saved by the leg of PSV goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson.

And the hosts took full advantage of the let-off, Koevermans grabbing his first when he directed Stanislav Manolev's right-wing cross past Jelle ten Rouwelaar.

Then he sidefooted home a Lazovic cross at the near post to give his side the lead.

And Afellay made the points safe in the first minute of injury-time, embarking on a 60-yard run before finishing from 12 yards.

Al Sowaileh wins it for Al Hilal

Ahmed Al Sowaileh scored with three minutes remaining as Al Hilal came from behind to ensure a winning start to their Saudi League campaign with a 2-1 triumph at Al Qadisiya.

Al Qadisiya opened the scoring through Brazilian striker Nilson after 14 minutes, but the visitors were back on level terms after 28 minutes as Abdullatif Al Ghannam equalised.

And last year's runners-up claimed all three points as Al Sowaileh netted with the clock counting down.

Elsewhere, Angolan striker Amadou Flavio scored twice as Al Shabab eased to a 3-1 win over Najran.

The home side took a surprise 13th-minute lead through Abdulaziz Mubarak and Al Shabab had to wait until three minutes before the hour mark to equalise through Brazilian midfielder Marcelo Camatcho.

Flavio handed his side the lead 12 minutes later before sealing the win with eight minutes remaining to leave Al Shabab and Al Hilal at the top of the table alongside defending champions Al Ittihad and Al Ahli, who opened their accounts with wins on Tuesday.

Finally, Al Ittifaq scored twice from the penalty spot to earn a 2-2 draw with 10 man Al Wahda.

Mohamad Al Shahrani put Al Ittifaq ahead from the spot after just six minutes before Mokhtar Falata equalised for Al Wahda two minutes into the second half.

Ahmed Al Mousa completed the turnaround for Al Wahda on the hour mark, but after Majed Bilal was sent-off for the home side, Abdulrahman Al Qahtani converted his side's second penalty of the night to secure a point.

The game between Al Nasr and Al Hazm was postponed as a large number of Al Hazm's squad are reported to have swine flu.

Di Matteo happy with three points

Roberto Di Matteo hailed West Brom's resilience as they hung on to claim another three points at Peterborough.

The Baggies were cruising at three up after 41 minutes but Posh reduced the deficit to one goal eight minutes after half-time and West Brom had to dig deep for their second win in three games.

That put them in with the leading bunch of teams on seven points on their return to the Coca-Cola Championship.

Di Matteo said: "It is a long season but better to get off to a good start. Every ground where we go is hostile and, even after taking a three-goal lead, we knew the game wasn't over at half-time.

"In the end I was pleased with the way we held on as Peterborough tried very hard in the second half and we gave two easy goals away."

Di Matteo's men were awesome in attack before the break and it took Luke Moore only three minutes to break the deadlock when Posh goalkeeper Joe Lewis allowed a powerful shot to squirm under his body.

Then Welsh international defender Craig Morgan was left red-faced after Moore made the most of a simple opportunity to double Albion's lead 11 minutes before half-time when Morgan's atrocious clearance was pounced on by Chris Wood.

Moore's threat was no surprise to Di Matteo, who continued: "We have seen him looking very sharp in training and it was just a matter of time before he made an impression."

Moore's second goal ended a spell of home domination in which Craig Mackail-Smith struck an upright either side of Aaron Mclean seeing two efforts saved by Scott Carson in a goalmouth scramble.

Mackail-Smith, making his 100th Posh appearance, also had a header ruled out for offside.

Albion struck again four minutes before the break when Chris Brunt tapped home from point-blank range after Shaun Cummings flashed a low delivery across the face of goal.

But if Albion thought the rest would be easy they were in for a surprise as Mackail-Smith headed past Carson in first-half stoppage-time after being picked out by Shaun Batt.

Darren Ferguson's men maintained the momentum after the break and pulled back another one, with Mclean forcing in George Boyd's low 53rd-minute cross.

Posh thought they were level when Mackail-Smith bundled the ball into the net only for Mclean to be penalised for a foul on Carson.

Disappointed Posh boss Darren Ferguson, who has seen his promoted side take a solitary point so far, said: "We gave away three awful goals and there is no doubt this cost us the game. You simply can't give yourself a mountain to climb like that."

But Ferguson was also adamant Mackail-Smith's disallowed effort should have stood.

"There's absolutely no reason why Craig's goal in the second half should not have stood," he added. "The referee was appalling and I knew we were never going to get a decision."

Universidad reach last 16

Universidad de Chile have become the first team to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16, after beating Cali 1-0.

Jose Horacio Basualdo's team join reigning champions Internacional of Brazil, who start playing in the last-16 as title holders.

Argentinian playmaker Walter Montillo gave Universidad the victory and a 3-1 aggregate win with a 68th-minute strike.

Universidad could have opened the scoring earlier at the Estadio Pascual Guerrero, but the post rejected a Rafael Olarra header at the 56th after a Montillo corner.

Universidad now face Internacional for a berth in the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, Argentina's Tigre, who are making the very first appearance in an international club championship, saw-off compatriots San Lorenzo 2-1 at home.

In the first leg of the tie, Diego Cagna's Tigre took a two-goal lead early on, Martin Morel opening the scoring in the fourth minute before turning provider for Lucas Oviedo to make it 2-0 soon after.

San Lorenzo captain Diego Rivero reduced the deficit in the 31st minute but his side ended the game with 10 men as midfielder Juan Manuel Torres was sent off with 10 minutes to go.

Morel is enthusiastic ahead of the second leg on September 13.

He told Fox Sports: "We started very well. We knew we had to put pressure on them. We watched a lot of pre-season games.

"Winning was the point and we did it. Now, we must play as visitors with the same mentality. That's how we'll qualify."

Finally, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) have awarded River Plate of Uruguay a 3-0 win over Blooming in the first leg of their Preliminary Stage fixture.

The match, played on August 11, was abandoned in the 68th minute after a fan of the Bolivian team invaded the field and hit River forward Henry Gimenez.

River were ahead 1-0 thanks to a 62nd-minute goal by Federico Puppo, but the Conmebol changed the result as punishment. That means Blooming must win 4-0 on August 27 if they are to reach the next stage.

Al Ittihad open with win

Saudi League champions Al Ittihad kicked off their title defence with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Al Fateh.

Al Ittihad, who will face Uzbek side Pakhtakor in the Asian Champions League quarter-finals next month, took an early lead after 13 minutes through defender Saleh Al Saqri.

Al Ittihad doubled their advantage two minutes before the break when skipper Mohamed Noor found the back of the net, before Al Fateh reduced the arrears in the 47th minute when Ahmed Abu Obaid converted from the spot.

It was not enough, however, as Al Ittihad held out to claim three points.

Elsewhere, fellow Jeddah giants Al Ahli grabbed a 1-0 win over Al Raed thanks to a last-minute strike from Ahmed Darwish.

Pele in line for return

Yohann Pele could make his return from injury in Toulouse's Europa League qualifier against Trabzonspor on Thursday.

The former Le Mans goalkeeper, who joined Les Violets on a free transfer this summer, hurt his wrist in a pre-season match against Bordeaux in July and has been out of action for the past month.

But he was today named in Toulouse's 23-man squad for their play-off round first-leg encounter in Turkey. He will battle with Olivier Blondel for a starting spot.

Luan (ankle), Mathieu Berson (Achilles) and Soren Larsen (ankle) are Toulouse players sidelined for the match.

Tampines return to winning ways

Tampines Rovers ended their three-match losing streak as Edward Tan's strike secured a 1-0 win over Balestier Khalsa.

Defender Tan netted after 21 minutes as Vorawan Chitavanich's Rovers, who were without five first team regulars through injury and suspension - including leading scorer Noh Alam Shah, claimed all three points.

The win lifts Rovers above Gombak United and Brunei DPMM into second place, 11 points adrift of two-time defending champions Singapore Armed Forces.

Rosenborg win to extend lead

Rosenborg extended their lead at the top of the Tippeligaen to seven points with a 2-0 win over Bodo/Glimt.

Mickael Lustig put the Trondheim club ahead after 59 minutes and Norway striker Steffen Iversen doubled their advantage nine minutes later.

In today's other game, Tromso and fourth-placed Stabaek drew 0-0.

Bordeaux 4-1 Lens

Bordeaux began the defence of their Ligue 1 title in style with an emphatic home win over Lens.

Yoann Gourcuff scored twice and Marouane Chamakh - a transfer target of Premier League sides Arsenal and Sunderland - also got on the scoresheet to seal the win in the dying moments.

The home side took the lead on 11 minutes after dominating the early stages through a brilliant individual effort from Wendell.

He collected the ball from Fernando Cavenaghi on the right-hand edge of the area and fired a superb left-footed shot into the opposite top corner.

Chamakh then had a penalty appeal turned down after 20 minutes when he looked to have been fouled in the area by Alaeddine Yahia.

But Lens equalised against the run of play six minutes before the interval when Yohan Demont's cross was met with a diving header by Issam Jemaa at the near post.

Bordeaux regrouped at the interval and quickly regained their lead when Gourcuff's shot from the edge of the area took a deflection on its way past Vedran Runje in the Lens goal.

The visitors had a second equaliser ruled out on 56 minutes when Abdoulrazak Boukari was adjudged to have fouled Henrique in the air and Yoan Gouffran went close at the other end with a flashing left-foot volley.

It was not until the 90th minute that Bordeaux made sure of the points however, Chamakh applying the finish after more good work from Gourcuff down the right.

And Gourcuff deservedly topped off a fine performance with his second in injury time, heading home from close range to make it 4-1.

Lille 1-2 Lorient

Lorient registered a surprise win at Lille on the opening weekend of the Ligue 1 season.

Lille finished fifth last term and qualified for the Europa League play-off round in midweek by completing a 4-0 aggregate win over FK Sevojno.

But they came unstuck on their return to domestic action with goals from Kevin Gameiro and Marama Vahirua proving enough to see off a home side who could only muster an own goal from Olivier Monterrubio in reply.

The home side were dominant in the early stages with Lorient struggling to make any inroads going forward.

Robert Vittek had Lille's first chance after 13 minutes but failed to test Fabien Audard in the Lorient goal.

Les Dogues came again after 18 minutes with Ludovic Obraniak's well-timed run and shot from a Franck Beria cross whizzing inches past the post.

Audard distinguished himself after 22 minutes by denying Emerson with the Brazilian having been put through by Eden Hazard.

After spending the opening half hour on the back foot, Lorient countered and struck with their first chance.

Monterrubio whipped in a free-kick and Gameiro got ahead of his marker to nod home.

The home fans were stunned again seven minutes after the restart when a loose pass from Nicolas Plestan gifted possession to Monterrubio and his pass was converted by Vahirua.

Lille almost hit back immediately with Rio Mavuba's shot hitting the post.

But Lorient remained a threat on the break and only a smart save from Ludovic Butelle prevented Monterrubio from increasing the home side's woes.

Monterrubio's next involvement was to head Florent Balmont's cross into his own net, an error which preceded a late onslaught on the Lorient goal as they sought an equaliser.

Audard preserved his side's lead with 14 minutes to go by blocking bravely when Mavuba tried to fire in at the far post while Lorient had an even bigger scare in injury time.

Obraniak turned and shot with the ball almost finding its way to Pierre Aubameyang but the substitute's outstretched leg just failed to make contact when the merest touch would have been enough.

FC Utrecht 1-0 Willem II

FC Utrecht made it two wins out of two to start the new Eredivisie season as they edged out Willem II.

Francis Dickoh got the only goal of the game six minutes before half-time to keep Utrecht level on points with Ajax at the top of the table.

Willem II coach Alfons Groenendijk was sent off late in the first half on a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.

Willem II had enjoyed the first chance of the game, with Ronnie Reiners breaking through to go one-on-one with Michel Vorm after only six minutes, forcing an excellent save from the Utrecht goalkeeper.

But from then on it was almost all Utrecht.

In the 13th minute, Maikel Aerts did well to punch away Ricky van Wolfswinkel's shot.

Jacob Mulenga then rattled the crossbar with a header and the hosts kept up the pressure when Dries Mertens sent a shot narrowly wide.

Seconds later they were in the lead with Mertens turning provider to whip in a corner that Dickoh met with a strong shot to find the net.

Mertens could have doubled the lead before the break but sent his shot just wide, and the frustrations told for Willem II as Groenendijk was sent to the stands after complaining to referee Bas Nijhuis.

Utrecht continued to dominate in the early going of the second half, but chances were few and far between for either side.

It took until the 78th minute for there to be a clear sight of goal, but Mulenga's header was wide from Mertens' cross.

Mertens was terrorising the Willem II defence and his cross in the 86th minute found Kevin Vandenbergh but the shot was charged down.

In the final moments Willem II produced a pair of chances, but could not find an equaliser.

Venlo 2-2 ADO Den Haag

ADO Den Haag let slip a two-goal advantage to draw at VVV-Venlo and finished the match with nine men.

Wesley Verhoek and Ricky van den Bergh's penalty gave the visitors a comfortable lead with less than half an hour gone.

But Keisuke Honda pulled one back for VVV eight minutes from the break and their chances of getting something from the match increased when Karim Soltani was sent-off for a second bookable offence shortly after the hour mark.

Honda levelled matters in the 76th minute and ADO's misery was complete when Van den Bergh also saw red.

ADO got off to a good start when Verhoek latched onto Berry Powel's cross at the near post and fired them into an eighth-minute lead.

Achmed Ahahaoui had a great chance to equalise minutes later but he blazed over the bar from five yards out.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 29th minute when Sandro Calabro handled the ball in the area and Van den Bergh converted the resulting penalty.

Honda reduced the deficit when he rounded Danny Buijs before playing a quick one-two with Diogo Viana and lashing the ball home.

Van den Bergh could have doubled his tally after the break but sent his free-kick just past the post before seeing another effort fly narrowly wide.

ADO were to rue those missed opportunities as Soltani picked up his second yellow of the day and 14 minutes later Honda headed home the equaliser.

Van den Bergh followed his team-mate for an early bath after he was also shown a second yellow five minutes from time.

However, VVV could not make the numerical advantage count despite an additional seven minutes of stoppage time.

Twente 1-1 PSV Eindhoven

PSV Eindhoven are still waiting for their first Eredivisie win of the season after drawing with FC Twente.

Balazs Dzsudzsak equalised after Douglas had given Twente the lead, but neither side could add to their tally in an entertaining clash.

Twente had the first chance of the match after 16 minutes with Theo Janssen firing wide from distance, but the home side had better luck three minutes later.

Janssen swung in a corner which was punched away by PSV goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson into the path of Douglas, who nodded the ball into the top left corner of the net.

Their lead lasted just six minutes though, with Dzsudzsak finding some space before blasting home from 16 yards beyond the reach of Sander Boschker.

Twente's response was a header at the other end from Janssen which narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Steve McClaren's men continued to have the better chances and Isaksson was called upon to turn away a testing free-kick from Janssen at the start of the second half.

Isaksson again got the better of Janssen after 60 minutes, punching his 20-yard drive out for a corner.

Boschker was not standing idle at the other end though, and Dzsudzsak was denied the chance to double his tally when his 18-yard strike was tipped over the bar.

It was PSV's turn to take control of proceedings as the clock ran down, but Boschker could not be beaten with both substitute Danny Koevermans and Danko Lazovic seeing shots palmed away by the Twente goalkeeper.

Vitesse Arnhem 0-0 Feyenoord

Both sides missed gilt-edged chances as Vitesse Arnhem and Feyenoord had to settle for a goalless draw.

Vitesse will count themselves unlucky after seeing one Lasse Nilsson effort hit the post and another cleared off the line.

But Leroy Fer should have won it at the death for Feyenoord only to place a free header over the bar.

Santi Kolk was at the heart of all of Vitesse's most promising play and he created a chance for Nilsson after just four minutes.

His through-ball sent the Swede clear and, even though he chipped the ball over keeper Rob van Dijk, Ron Vlaar got back to clear off the line.

Kolk himself saw a powerful shot parried away by Van Dijk two minutes later.

The Rotterdammers first chance arrived just before the half-hour mark as veteran frontman Roy Makaay looked to add the finish to a well-worked counter-attack but could not beat Piet Velthuizen with a low shot.

That, though, was a rare sight of goal for the visitors in the first half.

At the other end Kolk fired just over the bar before, on the stroke of half-time, Nilsson was given time to turn in the six-year box only for his shot to hit a post with the goal gaping.

Vitesse continued to look dangerous after the break as the lively Kolk forced Van Dijk to push his stinging shot behind and then, from the resulting corner, flicked the ball on for Jeroen Drost, who headed an easy chance over the bar.

That missed could have proved costly as Feyenoord came on strong late in the game.

Velthuizen had to save with his feet from Vlaar's venomous free-kick and, in the 88th minute, Fer met Luigi Bruins' ball in at the back post.

The teenager, though, in keeping with the rest of the game, put his free header over the bar.
